OBSERVATION

This question was fairly attempted by the candidates.  In 8(a), majority of the candidates could list four methods of identification in cattle production.  Also, in 8(b-c), most of the candidates could neither mention three malnutrition-related diseases in farm animals nor state five effects of aquatic weeds in a fish pond.  However, in 8(d), majority of the candidates could state four fishery regulations.

The expected answers include:
8(b)     Malnutrition-related diseases in farm animals
                -              Milk fever/Hypocalcaemia

  • Crazy chick disease – Grass tetany
  • Rickets
  • Ketosis/Acetonaemia
  • Osteomalacia
  • Perosis/Slipped tendon
  • Baby pig anaemia
  • Bloat
  • Acidosis
  • Hypomagnesaemia
  • Pregnancy toxemia

(c)           Effects of aquatic weeds in a fish pond
                -              At a minimal level, the weeds could serve as food to the fish.
                -              Weeds could harbor pathogens, pests and predators.
-              Weeds cause loss of water from the pond by evaporation through transpiration process.

  • Weeds cause obstruction to light penetration into the water.
  • They limit air penetration in the water
  • They cause gradual reduction in pond size and eventual drying
  • Weeds reduce evaporation
  • Competes with fish for nutrients and dissolved oxygen
  • Obstruct easy harvesting of fish
Some aquatic weeds are poisonous to fish
