OBSERVATION

   This question was well attempted by the candidates.  In 7(a-b), majority of the candidates were able to give the reasons why fish farming is important and state the factors that influence the choice of a suitable site for a fish pond.  Although in 7(c)(i), majority of the candidates could not mention the sources of water as a feed nutrient but in 7(c)(ii-iv), most of them were able to mention the sources of feed nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins.  However, most of the candidates were unable to mention the ways by which roundworm infestation is of economic importance in livestock production as required in 7(d).

      The expected answers include:

        (c)     Sources of feed nutrients
  (i)    Sources of water
         -    Fresh grasses/legumes
         -    Fresh fodder
         -    Metabolic water from oxidation of fats
         -    Direct intake of water
         -    Fruits

(d)     Ways by which roundworm infestation is of economic importance in livestock
          production

  • Feeds on digested food in the host
  • Retards growth
  • Sucks blood thus causing anaemia
  • Causes respiratory problems
  • Leads to indigestion of food
  • Causes constipation
  • Loss of weight(emaciation)
  • Leads to loss of appetite or anorexia
  • Causes general body weakness
  • Damages organs in the body
  • Causes death  of host
  • Causes internal haemorrhage
