The diagram below illustrates the life cycle of  a pest Study it carefully and use it to answer questions (a) to (d).

(a) Describle the life cycle of the pest [6 marks]
(b) (i) Identify the most destructive developmental stage of the illustrated insect pest.   [1 mark]
(ii)Give two reason for your answer   [2 marks]
(c) State four ways of controlling the pest illustrated in the diagram  [4 marks]
(d) State two ways by which the pest is of economic importance in agriculture [2 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was popular with the candidates and their performance, was highly encouraging. In question 3(a), however, some candidates were unable to describe the: life cycle of the pest The expected answers include:
Description of the life cycle of.the pest

  1. After mating, female lays eggs on leaves
  2. After hatching, larvae remain together for some time on the leaves
  3.  Larvae eventually climb into leaf funnel
  4.  Larvae feed on young developing leaves
  5.  Larvae then bore into stem
  6. They continue to :feed inside the stem until they pupate
  7. Six larval instars and further pupation occur in the stem
  8. Adult insect emerges about 38 days after eggs have been laid

In question 3(b )(i&ii), many candidates were able to identify the most destructive developmental stage of the illustrated  insect pest and give reasons for their answers.
Also, in question 3(c) and (d), many candidates were able to state ways of controlling the pest and ways by which the pest is of economic importance in agriculture.
