Question 1
  1.  State Ohm’s law.
  2.  Draw the phasor diagram for a series RC circuit.
  3.  An electric soldering iron draws 2.4 A from a 240 V, 50 Hz power supply.    Calculate:
  4. its resistance;
the power consumed

Observation

The expected answers were:

  1.  Ohm’s law states that the potential difference across two points of a circuit is   proportional to the current produced provided the temperature is kept  constant.
  1.  The phasor diagram required is:

  1. (i)  V = IR

      R =  =  100 Ω
(ii) Power = I2R = VI =
      P = 2.42 x 100 = 240 x 2.4 =  = 576 W
The question was on Direct Current Circuit Theory. It was well attempted by candidates. Many candidates encountered some challenge with the phasor diagram.
