building construction Paper 2 May/June 2015

Question 1

  1. (a)(i)         Draw a crankshaft of a four cylinder in-line engine.

(ii)         Label any four parts on the sketch in 1(a) (i) above.

(b)        State three functions of a crankshaft.

(c)        (i)         How many crankpin journals does a four-cylinder engine crankshaft have?
(ii)         How many main bearing journals does a four-cylinder in-line engine crankshaft have?

Observation

Most candidates attempted this question with good performance in parts (a) and (c) of the question.  The problematic part of the question was part (b).  The required response to part (b) is given below:

(b)        The functions of a crankshaft include:

  • It changes the up and down motion of the piston to rotary motion used to drive the road wheels. (i.e. it coverts the reciprocating motion of the piston to rotary motion used to drive the road wheels);
  • It is used to drive the camshaft at half its speed;
  • It is also used to indirectly drive the alternator of the charging system, distributor of the ignition system, oil pump of the lubricating system and water pump of the cooling system;
  • It provides a mounting for the flywheel.
