  .    CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

        The candidates manifested the following weaknesses:

  • poor spelling of labels and technical terms like  ‘vase-deference for ‘vas deferens’, ‘epididymics’ for ‘epididymis’.
  • the use of alphabets in answers instead of the word required e.g. the use of ‘d’ instead of ‘the’, ‘b/c’ instead of ‘because’;
  • illegible  handwriting;
  • pluralization of labels that should be singular e.g ‘testes’ instead of ‘testis’,
  • inability to give correct scales, title, identifying the x and y axes, and plot points correctly in question 2a.
  • non adherence to the rubrics.

 4.  SUGGESTED REMEDIES

      The following remedies were proffered to overcome those weaknesses

  • Teachers should emphasize the need for correct spelling of technical terms in Biology;
  • Students should be encouraged to express themselves in and write correct English;
  • Teachers should constantly be exposed to seminars and workshops with emphasis on the teaching of Ecology, sex education and genetics;
  • Teachers should endeavour to cover the syllabus before the onset of the examinations.
  • Students should be taught how to answer examination  questions;
  • School, should ensure students are provided with standard text books and  libraries.
