(a)        Define bonding in relation to wall construction.

(b)        Sketch the alternate plans of a one-brick thick wall, six-brick long in Flemish bond.

(c)        State two functional requirements of a roof.

(d)        Sketch to illustrate each of the following types of roof construction:

            (i)         lean-to;
            (ii)        mono-pitch.

OBSERVATION

 Most candidates were able to:

  1. define bonding;
  2. state the functional requirements of a roof .

 

However, they were unable to sketch the:

  1. alternate plans of a one-brick thick wall, six-brick long in Flemish bond;
  2. given types of roof construction.

 

The expected response to question 4 is as given below:

4(a)      Bonding refers to the interlocking arrangement of bricks or blocks in a wall by setting – out and maintaining the correct lap.

OR

  1. Arrangement of blocks or bricks in a wall in a definite pattern to avoid straight joints.

4(c)      Functional Requirement of a Roof

1.         To exclude rain from a building
2.         To resist wind pressure
3.         Provides barrier to sound transmission
4.         Provides thermal insulation to the building
5.         It gives lateral support to walls of a building
