Observation
Most of the candidates were able to:
- list the types of floor finishes suitable for a college library;
- state the factors to be considered in the choice of a floor finish;
- list the methods used to ensure personal safety on a building site.
However, few of the candidates were unable to:
- State one function of manhole, soak away pit and gully.
The expected response to question 5 is as stated below:
- (i) Types of floor finishes for a college library:
- wood block flooring;
- ceramic floor tiles;
- terrazzo floor tiles;
- cement screed;
- polyvinyl chloride (pvc) tiles;
- granolithic flooring;
- marble.
(ii) Factors to be considered in the choice of a floor finish:
- ease of cleansing;
- durability;
- non slippery;
- economy/income of the owner;
- noise;
- aesthetic/beaty/decoration;
- resistance to wear/indentation;
- strength;
- resistance to moisture;
- ease of maintenance/where to be used;
- quality of materials;
- clamate/climatic condition.
- One function of each of the following in drainage system:
- Manhole – is a chamber which provides access to the drain for inspection/cleaning/testing.
- Soakaway pit – it is used to dispose of surface water and waste water which cannot be directed into some natural water course.
- Gully. – used to discharge rainwater and waste water from sanitary fittings.
- Three methods used to ensure personal safety on a building site:
- observing safety instructions;
- use of correct tools and equipments;
- no running or horse play in the workshop;
- inflammable materials such as petrol should be handled with care;
- wearing protective clothing e.g. helmet/hard hat, safety/hard boots, hand gloves, eye goggles, safety belt, ear plugs.
