A good number of the candidates demonstrated good knowledge of:

• significant figures;
• units;
• basicity of acid;
• characteristics tests for organic functional groups;
• separation techniques;
• theoretical concepts behind experimental procedures;
• appropriate organic reagents and experimental conditions needed for the identification of functional groups such as: hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbon-carbon triple bond, aldehyde group;
• basic separation/purification techniques of impure substances;
• drawing logical conclusions from observations.
