This was a very popular question. Majority of the candidates were able to enumerate
careers in clothing and textiles but only few could answer questions (b) and (c). The expected answers are as follows:
(a) Careers in clothing & Textiles
(i) Designing: Creates new designs for garments (fashion). There are also designers of fabrics and designers of clothing accessories. They are 'fashion designer
(ii) Pattern makers: These people develop paper patterns for sale.
(iii) Beauty care and hair dressing: Beauticians and hair dressers run salons where they take care of people's hair and perform other beauty treatment.
(iv) Dressmaking/tailoring: Dressmakers and tailors sew garments for people.
(v) Dry cleaning and laundering: Dry cleaning and washing and ironing of clothing articles for people. They also perform minor clothing repairs like fixing button.
(vi) Modeling: 'Models' work in fashion houses/industries where they
exhibit newly designed garments and accessories. .
(vii) Fashion merchandising: People in this career, select, buy and sell textile, apparels and other clothing accessories. ,
(viii) Weaving: Weavers use yarns to construct fabrics or textiles using different methods of weaving.
(ix) Teaching: Teachers in this area teach Clothing and Textiles at various
Levels, e.g. secondary schools, colleges, vocational/trade schools,
universities etc. ' . .
(x) Dyeing: This involves decorating fabrics with dyes using different ' methods. Dyers can be employed in industries or be self employed to produce local fabrics like tie dye (Adire), Batik, etc.
(xi) Fashion illustrators: Make sketches of different parts of the body and garment styles.
(xii) Fashion Columnist: They write about fashions in vogue, they also forecast fashions. They advertise and write about properties of
textiles, clothing etc. ,
(xiii) Interior Decoration: This involves the use of knowledge of elements and principles of design to beautify houses, homes, offices, halls, museums, etc.
- Textile Designing: This involves the use of elements and principles of design to decorate fabrics.
