Question 1

The aim of both experiments is to study the characteristics of a voltage multiplier.

(a) Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 1.

(b) Ask the supervisor to check the circuit connection.

Table  1

 V1(V) V2(V) Va(V) Va(V) √2 x V1

(d) Switch on the supply voltage.

(e)    Measures and record in Table 1, the voltage V11.

(f)   Repeat step (e) for voltages V2, Va and Vb

(g)     Switch off the supply voltage.
(h)     Complete Table 1.
(i)      Compare the value of Va with √2 x V1 and comment on your
observation in terms of r.m.s. and peak values.

(j)   Briefly describe the operation of the circuit.

(k)  State one application of the circuit.

OBSERVATION

This experiment designed to study the characteristics of a voltage multiplier was attempted by most candidates. The candidates’ performance was unsatisfactory.
The candidates were able to compare values of Va with √2 x V1 and make comments /observations in terms of r.m.s. values and peak values.
