Question 2

AIM: To investigate the variable resistor for transistor regulating circuit.

  1.  Connect the circuit as shown in figure 2.
  2.  Ask the supervisor to check the circuit connection.
  3.  Copy Table 2 into your answer booklet.

  1.  Use the multimeter to measure the resistance of the potentiometer at 0.5   kΩ.
  2.  Switch on the power supply, measure and record the corresponding values  of current (mA) and voltage (V) in Table 2.
  3.  Switch off the power supply.
  4.  Repeat step(e) for the other values of RB in Table 2.
  5.  Comment briefly on the:

              (i) voltage and current readings;
              (ii) input and output voltages.

OBSERVATION

The candidates were expected to connect the circuit as shown, measure and record the current (mA) and voltage (V) in Table 2 and comment briefly on both readings and the input and output voltages.
The expected answers were:

(h)     (i)      Voltage decreased uniformly with decrease in current.
(ii)      Input voltage remained constant at 12 V (DC) and output voltage decreased uniformly from 10.54 V to 0 V.

As reported by the Chief Examiner, the readings obtained by many of the candidates that answered this question showed that they did not know how to adjust meter settings to correspond to indicated values of measured quantities
