Question 1

AIM: To determine the d.c. gain of a bipolar transistor.

  1.   Connect the circuit diagram as shown in Figure 1.
  2.   Ask the Supervisor to check the circuit connection.
  3.   Copy Table 1 into your answer booklet.

  1. Close switch SW1.
  2. Adjust Vcc until VCE = 10 V.
  3. Close switch SW1.
  4. Adjust the variable potentiometer until Ib = 100 µA.
  5. Record in Table 1, the corresponding reading of Ic.
  6. Repeat steps (g) and (h) for the other values of Ib in Table 1.
  7. Plot a graph of Ic (mA) on the vertical axis against Ib (µA) on the horizontal axis.
  8. Determine the slope of the graph.

OBSERVATION

The candidates were expected to connect the circuit as shown, measure and record the current Ic (mA) in Table 1, plot a graph and determine the slope of the graph.
The expected answers were:

          Table 1

The slope of the graph was 68.
Only a few candidates recorded measurement results of the type required. Majority of the candidates could not accurately determine the slope of the graph.
