Question 2
  1. Define the following with respect to alternating current circuits:
    1. reactance;
    2. Impedance.
  2. Figure 3 is a series resonance circuit.

          Calculate the:

    1. resonance frequency;
    2. inductive reactance;
    3. capacitive reactance.

OBSERVATION

The expected answers were:
(a) (i)      Reactance

This is the opposition offered by a pure inductor or pure capacitor to the passage of electric/alternating current.

   (ii)      Impedance

This is the total opposition offered by a circuit containing resistances and reactances to the passage of alternating/electric current.
(b)

  1. Resonance frequency

 fr=

(ii)      Inductive reactance

                    XL       =  2fL
                    XL       =  2 x159 x 0.05
                    XL       =  50Ω

(iii)     Capacitive reactance
                    XC       =
                    XC       =
                    XC       =  50 Ω

The question was on Circuit Analysis. The question was very popular with the candidates. Most candidates that attempted this question did well in the part (b), while quite a few could not define reactance and impedance, mistaking reactance for resistance. The performance was fair.
