Candidates’ Weaknesses

The weaknesses observed are the same as those listed every year:

  1. Starting proper nouns in small letters;
  2. Wrong tenses;
  3. Wrong number(singular and plural);
  4. Lack of familiarity with the written word;
  5. Attaching wrong and unthinkable meanings to words (Questions 6(h) and 7(h);
  6. Inability to re-state in the candidate’s own words, ideas contained in a passage;
  7. Ignorance of the parts of speech of the English Language;
  8. Ignorance of common literary terms;
  9. Ignorance of functions of clauses;
  10. Indiscriminate lifting of portions of the set passages as answers.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

  1. Candidates should learn the basic grammatical structures of English Language.
  2. Candidates should inculcate the habit of reading widely with a view to improving their vocabulary.
  3. Candidates should practice essay writing regularly.
  4. Candidates should understand the demands of questions before answering them.
