Observation

In this question, two approaches were popular among the candidates; using combination approach or selection without replacement.  The combination approach was the more popular approach.  Candidates were able to obtain the sample space, 14C5, and also the favourable outcomes 8C3 and 6C3. Hence, they were able to obtain the required probability thus:

8C3 x 6C3 = 60 .
     14C5      143

In part (b), the required probability was gotten thus    8C5 + 6C5  =   31
                                                                                                    14C5           100
The report commended the performance of the candidates in this
question.
