In this question, two approaches were popular among the candidates; using combination approach or selection without replacement.  The combination approach was the more popular approach.  Candidates were able to obtain the sample space, ¹⁴C₅, and also the favourable outcomes ⁸C₃ and ⁶C₃. Hence, they were able to obtain the required probability thus:   

⁸C₃ x ⁶C₃ = 60 .
     ¹⁴C₅      143

In part (b), the required probability was gotten thus    ⁸C₅ + ⁶C₅  =   31
                                                                                                    ¹⁴C₅           100
The report commended the performance of the candidates in this
