Question 1

Study  the map extract provided on a scale of 1:50,000 and answer the following questions:

(a) Reduce the map to one third its original size and state the new scale in representative Fraction (RF).  On your outline, show and name:

the settlement of KAIAMA;
the main road leading from KAIAMA to the north east end of the map;
River Kodoo.  Indicate its direction of flow with an arrow.

(b) Calculate the gradient of River Wabba from its source to the point where it joins River Wuruma.

(c)   With evidence from the map, describe the functions of KAIAMA settlement.

This was a compulsory question.  The performance was just fair.  Many candidates did not get the correct measurement of the new outline, probably because of inadequate practice prior to the examination.  Many of the candidates also could not calculate the new scale and draw the gradient correctly.  Many of them were able to specify the functions of KAIAMA correctly and also provided evidences to support their answers from the map.  More practice is required by candidates in the aspect of map drawing and interpretation of topographical maps.
