(a)        What is sovereignty?
(b)        State five factors that can limit the sovereignty of a state.

Observation

Majority of the candidates who attempted this question scored high marks.  The common anomaly noticed in candidates’ responses was their inability to provide appropriate answers for the (a) part of the question.

Candidates were expected to provide their answers thus to score full marks for this question.

  (a)        Sovereignty can be defined as the supreme power of the state to make and enforce laws within her territory without any external influence or interference.

(b)        (i)         Membership of international organizational organizations;
              (ii)        signing of international treaties;
             (iii)       customs and traditions;
              (iv)       technical and military aids;
              (v)        public opinion;
                (vi)       land-locked;
               (vii)      influence of powerful nations like USA;
                (viii)     the activities of pressure groups.
