Question 2

       (a)   Mention two diseases that affect teeth in adults.                           [  2 marks ]
       (b)   State three ways of preventing tooth decay in humans                 [  3 marks ]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In part (a)  candidates correctly mentioned diseases that affect teeth in adults, few mentioned wrong answers such as scurvy and rickets as diseases that affect teeth in adults.  In part (b) candidates correctly stated ways of preventing tooth decay in humans, while few candidates stated wrong answers such as avoid drinking alcohol, avoid smoking and avoid eating when about to sleep.

 

The expected answers are as follows

2 (a)    DISEASES THAT AFFECT TEETH IN ADULTS

  • gingivitis
  • dental caries/tooth decay
  • periodontitis
  •                                                                                                  
    (b)  WAYS OF PREVENTING TOOTH DECAY IN HUMANS

  • washing the mouth regularly e.g. proper tooth brushing
  • eating very little amount of sweet/sugary foods
  • eating adequate balanced diet/meal/diet containing calcium, phosphorus and  vitamins/fruits
  • washing mouth with mouth wash/rinse the mouth with warm water/salt solution
  • regular visitation to the dentist
  • avoid eating too cold/too hot foods
  • use dental floss/tooth picks to remove food particles
  • avoid the use of sharp objects/pins to pick the teeth
  • avoid using the teeth to open bottles
