               (b)        State five ways of controlling insect borne diseases       [5 marks ]              

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was very good.  In part (a)(i) candidates defined vitamins and in (ii) candidates also listed factors that may lead to unbalanced diet.  In part (b) candidates correctly stated ways of controlling insect borne diseases.

 

However, the expected answers are as follows:

8 (a)(i) VITAMINS

  • vitamins are organic substances/ produced in plants and animals/ found in food
  •  required/essential in small quantities/for healthy growth/good health
  •                                                                          

     

         (ii)   FACTORS THAT MAY LEAD TO UNBALANCED DIET    

  • poverty
  • poor eating habit/excessive consumption of a particular food
  • illiteracy/ignorance
  • weather/climate
  • scarcity/unavailability of food
  •   (b)      WAYS OF CONTROLLING INSECT – BORNE DISEASES

  • keep the surrounding/environment clean
  • wear protective clothing
  • keep houses and surrounding ventilated and illuminated at all time
  • keep food covered
  • use/spray insecticides to kill insects like mosquitoes, cockroach, house flies etc
  • drain of stagnant water/put oil on water surfaces
  • use nets on beds and windows
  • introduce biological predators
  •
