Highlight five achievements of the military under General Yakubu Gowon.

This was a popular question.   Expectedly, most of the candidates whoattempted the question were able to identify Gowon’s important contributions to the nation.  However, poor explanation of points resulted
 in low scores in most cases. Nonetheless, some candidates showed outstanding performance and were rewarded accordingly. The points they highlighted were:

• creation of twelve states;
• successful prosecution of the civil war;
• promotion of reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation work after the war;
• establishment of National Youth Service Corps in 1973;
• the construction of the national stadium;
• introduction of new currency, the naira; etc.
