(a) In what two ways did the colonial government help to improve the social life of Nigerians?
                       
(b)  Describe any three policies of the government which were criticized by the Nigerian educated elite.

Observation

This question was misinterpreted by the few candidates who attempted it.
They all concentrated on western education.

In part (a), the candidates were expected to mention the following points:

  1. western education was developed through giving of grants in-aid to schools, scholarships, etc;
  2. higher education was later introduced;
  3. in the field of health, government hospitals, dispensaries, health centres, etc, were built;
  4. construction of roads, railways and harbours, etc.

In part (b), they were expected to explain the following:

  1. forced labour;
  2. exploitation of economic resources;
  3. exclusion of elite participation in Indirect Rule;
  4. building of exclusive quarters (GRA) for Europeans.
