  1. (a)   List two types of seams which are good for a baby’s garment.          
    (b)   State two uses of tacking in garment construction.                             
    (c)    List two fabric rinses.
    (d)    Explain two differences between soaps and detergents.

Observation

This question was poorly answered as most of them could not write types of seams correctly.
The required answers to the question are as follows:
5(a) Types of seams for babies’ garments                                                                                                       

  • Flat seams e.g. run and fell/machine fell
  • French seam    
  • Overlaid/lapped seam                                                                                        

5(b) Uses of tacking in garment construction

  • To hold parts of the garments together for fitting
  • To hold hems, seams and darts in position for permanent stitching
  • To hold certain features in place correctly before stitching e.g. shoulder pad, pockets etc
  • To make construction lines on fabrics
  • To identify certain parts of garment sections e.g. pockets
  • To transfer markings unto fabric e.g. using tailor’s  tacks

5(c) Examples of fabric rinses

  • Laundry blue
  • Vinegar
  • Fabric softeners/ammonia/Borax
  • Disinfectants
  • Stiffeners/starch                                                                        

5(d) Differences between soaps and detergents        

 SOAPS DETERGENTS
  • Are made from animal fats/vegetable fat
  • Form scum with hard water 
  • Foam disappears quickly
  • Removes dirt but cannot take out stain
  • Have weaker effect on grease   
  • Do not lather well   
  • Are gentle on skin and fabric  
  • Are made from mineral oil
  • Do not form scum with hardwater
  • Foam disappears very slowly
  • Can remove stain to an extend
  • Have stronger effect on grease   
  • Lather well
  • Are harsh on skin and fabric
