Question 8

Comment on the role of Gwendolen Fairfax.

Observation

The following points were expected from the candidates:

  • Gwendolen Fairfax is Algernon’s cousin and Lady Bracknell’s daughter.

  • Her fashionable, but artificial pretentious nature.
  • Her obsession with marrying a man called Ernest which sustains the plot

  • Her exposition of society’s misplaced notion about the nature of men.
  • Her leads to Jack’s decision to be christened, hence the revelation that Jack is actually Ernest by name.

The question was fairly attempted by candidates.
