Question 4

Do you consider Jaja justified rebelling against his father’s authority.

Observation

Many candidates attempted this question. Only a few of them were unable to answer the question satisfactorily.

The following points should be well developed by the candidates:

  • Eugene’s anger at Jaja on Palm Sunday when he hurls his missal at him for Jaja’s refusal to receive Holy Communion and his remark that, ‘the wafer gives bad breath’.
  • Jaja’s skipping of supper knowing that his father does not tolerate deviation from the daily routine of activities.
  • Jaja’s request for the key to his room from Eugene, who concludes that Jaja has bowed to pressure from the devil to commit sin against himself.
  • Jaja taking responsibility for the death of his father who was poisoned by his mother, Beatrice.

Candidates’ performance in this question was good.
