Most of the candidates that attempted this question gave a plot summary of the text instead of stating how the Sharks led to the development of the plot.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

• The old man’s purposefulness and improvisation skills are shown as he endeavours to beat off the attacking Sharks.
• His improvisation skills would not have been brought to the fore had the Sharks not come.
• His determination to fight the Sharks is shown despite the fact that he is ill equipped.
• The loss of the fish does not dampen the old man’s sprit, thus, he is making plans to go to sea again.
• The Sharks contribute to Manolin’s resolve to be with the old man always.

Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
