Observation

Simon’s death leaves his earlier observation that the beast may be the boys themselves unconfirmed.  His death obliterates the light of civilisation. What Simon knows could not be revealed to others and restore sanity.  His death opens the floodgate for savagery and attack on decency. The boys have no more qualms about further killing.

The destruction of the bespectacled ‘fatty’ representing the source of light and insight is also a signal to savagery.
The silent antagonism between Jack and Ralph breaks into open confrontation and war.  By Simon’s death the key to the mystery of the beast is closed.

Few Candidates attempted the question. Candidates’ performance was fair.
