  1. Using a scale of 2 cm to represent 1 unit on the x- axis and 2 cm to represent 5 units on the y-axis, draw the graph of:
  2. y = 2x2 – 3x – 4;
  3. y = 3x – 4.
  1. From your graph, solve the equations:
  2. 2x2 – 3x – 4 = 0;
  3. 2x2 – 6x = 0.

Observation

This question was reported to have been attempted by majority of the candidates. It was also reported that majority of the candidates were able to complete the given table of values correctly. The graphs were also drawn correctly by majority of the candidates who attempted the question. However, the report further stated that candidates’ responses indicated that they needed to do more work at interpreting graphs correctly. Determining a point on the graph using the given scale was poorly handled by majority of the candidates. They were expected to draw the graph of y = 2x2 – 3x – 4 and y = 3x – 4 on the same graph sheet, using the given scales and obtain the solution of 2x2 – 3x – 4 = 0 as the x-coordinates of the points of intersection of
y = 2x2 – 3x – 4 and the x-axis which are x = -0.85 and 2.35.                                                                                                                                                                                           The solution of 2x2 – 6x = 0 was the x-coordinates of the points of intersection of y = 2x2 – 3x – 4 and y = 3x – 4 which are x = 0 and 3.
