Observation

This question was reported to be well attempted by majority of the candidates.  Majority of the candidates were able to carry out the conversion from Leones to Naira in part (a) and in part (b) it was reported that majority of the candidates showed a good understanding of mean and mode.

In part (b), candidates were expected to recall the definitions of mean and mode and apply them correctly.  Since the mean of the three numbers was 9, then the sum of the numbers was 9 x 3 = 27.  But the mode of the numbers was 11.  This implied that 11 occurred at least 2 times i.e 27 = 11 + 11 + x.  Hence, the required number was
x = 27 – 22 = 5.
