Observation

This question was reported to be attempted by majority of the candidates and they performed well in it.

In part(a) candidates were reported to have opened the brackets to have      (4 + 3) = 2 +   Therefore 7 + 4 < ½(4+3) became 7 + 4 < 2 + .  Bringing like terms together and solving gave x < - .  This was represented on the number line as

                          -1    -1  -    0

In part(b) candidates were able to show that if  was the first number, then the second was 2 and the third was 2 + 6. From the first statement,  + 2 + 2 + 6 = 81.  Solving this equation gave  = 15.  The other two numbers were 30 and 36 respectively.
