(a) Classify the following instruments under the given ethnic groups in Nigeria: Ogene, Kakaki, Bata Drum, Oja, Dundun, Shantu, Agidigbo, Ekwe, Udu.

(b) Name any two melodic idiophones in Nigeria.

(c) Write short notes on one of the following

(i) Membranophones;
(ii) Aerophones.

OBSERVATIONS

 

Candidates were attracted to this question, but in spite of its lucidity, candidates’ responses were not remarkable, this is due to candidates inadequate knowledge of the musical instruments of Nigeria. They were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:
(a)

Hausa

Igbo

Yoruba

Kakaki

Shantu

 

Ogene

Oja

Ekwe

Udu

Bata drum

Agidigbo

Dundun

(b) (i) Ngelenge / Ngedegwu

(ii) Agidigbo

(c) (i) Membranophones - these are instruments which produce sounds through the vibration of animal skin. The animal skin is stretched to cover a hollowed object. Sounds are produced by hitting the surface skin with sticks or palm of the hands.

(ii) Aerophones - These are instruments which produce sounds when air is blown into them. These include Oja, Alghaita, Kakaaki.
