Observation

Most candidates that attempted this question performed poorly.  They did not understand the range, character and level of each voice part in singing.  Rather than mentioning three Western composers, most of the candidates mentioned indigenous composers.  All these made them to lose viable marks.

Candidates were expected to respond to the question thus:
(a)
  1. Accent – Articulation of notes with reference to meter, dynamics, Rhythms and pitch.

  2. Folk song – Songs which are passed on orally from one generation to another.  Traditional or indigenous songs of unknown origin.
  3. Breath Control – Technique of managing the breath for fluency and meaningful singing.
  4. Expression – The art of giving meaning to music, using various performance techniques like dynamics, phrasing, pedaling and tempo.

(b)        Soprano

(c)        J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, W.A. Mozart, F.J. Haydn,
Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, L.W. Beethoven,
Richard Wagner, Claudio Monteverdi, Johannes Brahms,
            Hector Berlioz, Henry Purcell etc.
