Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a) could not correctly state duties of an umpire in a badminton game.  In part (b) candidates correctly stated instances in which a player loses a rally in badminton game.  In part (c)(i) candidates could not correctly explained the term let-in tennis game, they wrongly explained let as a play that is obstructed and does not attract a point and in (c)(ii) candidates correctly explained advantage-in in tennis game.

In part (d)(i) and (ii) candidates could not correctly state situations in which a let is called in tennis game and state conditions that make a service delivered to be valid in tennis game.

The expected answers are as follows:

6(a)    Duties of an Umpire in a Badminton Game

He/She

-    checks/ensures that playing facilities and equipment conform to the rules
-    tosses for choice of ends/right to serve first
-     keeps/reads out the scores
-     takes final decision on disputes/explained
            -     decides when a point is made or not
            -     rules on all infractions
-     enters the players name on the score sheet
            -     ensures that the lines judge and service judges are correctly positioned

 (b)   Instances in which a Player Loses a Rally in Badminton Game
       When Player
                         -    fails to return the shuttlecock over the net into the opponent’s court
                         -    touches the net or its support with racket, body or dress while the
shuttlecock is in play
                         -    strikes the shuttlecock before it crosses to his/her side of the net
                         -    shuttlecock touches the body/dress
                         -    obstruct an opponent
                         -    makes a double hit
                         -    plays the shuttlecock under the net

(c)   Explanation of Terms in Tennis Game
                           (i)    Let
                                                                             
                         A play that is obstructed and does not attract a point/explained

                      (d)(i)   Situations when a Let is Called in Tennis Game
                          -    served ball touches the net before landing in the receiver’s service court

                         -    serving from the base line
                        -     make sure the receiver is ready
                        -     toss the ball
                        -     strike the tossed ball with the racket
                        -     the ball lands in the service court of the receiver
                        -     ball does not touch the net before crossing over
