- Some candidate did not remove the stamens and petals as instructed and just drew the specimen like that, which lead to a loss of marks. Some other candidates removed the special petal which affected their diagrams. A good number of candidates could not identify the ovary of the flower as superior and could not state the reason namely that it is located on top of the receptacle above the point of attachment of the sepals and petals.
- Most candidates could describe the sepals and petals of the flower e.g. brightly coloured, fan-shaped etc but many of them could not state the function of the special petal. Some candidates wrote the general function of petals that is to attract insects rather than the specific function of the special petal which is to lead insects to the nectar. Candidates who attempted the question could also state features of the flower which have led to the success of flowering plants ego brightly coloured petals which attract insects which lead to pollination, reproduction, cross pollination and variation.
- .Many candidates however performed poorly on question 1 (b) as many of them could not identify the fruit type of specimen B, give other examples of the fruit type, state the mode of dispersal as well as state the biological importance of the class. Some candidates confused modes of dispersal with agents of dispersal and so lost marks.
- Expected answers include:
- Type of fruit (Specimen B) Legume/Pod
- Examples of legumes
- Beans, Peas, Caesalpinia, Crotolaria Delonix sp. Mucuma.
- Mode of dispersal Explosive mechanism.
- Biological importance of legumes –
- Source of food/protein;
- Fixes nitrogen .in the root/soil
- Serves as cover crop/prevents erosion
- Source of feed for livestock
