The identified weaknesses of candidates were as follows:
- Inability to relate structures of organisms to their functions;
- Inability to properly express themselves in good English.;
- Poor spelling of technical terms;
- Shallow knowledge of many of the tested concepts.
- Poor understanding of the requirements of the questions;
- Poor understanding of questions on “Genetics”;
- Inability to differentiate between the causative organism and vector of malaria.
The following remedies were proffered to overcome these weaknesses
- Introduction of spelling drills in Biology classes
- Qualified teachers should be employed to teach Biology not just any science
teacher
- Teachers for SS classes should take part in WAEC coordination exercises.
