COMMENT

Candidates performed quite well in this question.  Many were able to identify the
contraceptive methods but were unable to  correctly spell labels and
technical terms ; some used abbreviation  like ‘IUD’ and some used the plural of
labels – for guidelines pointing to single structures.

Most candidates could correctly name the labelled parts but could not spell them.
Most candidates were able to provide the functions of II, III and X correctly.

Many candidates were able to write the material condom is made of but wrongly wrote that the coil is made of metal.  Majority of the candidates wrote that contraceptive G is inserted into the ‘vagina’ instead of the ‘uterus’ and omitted that a doctor or trained midwife is needed to do it.

Some candidates could not state the advantages and disadvantages of G, and also how the contraceptive procedure E is carried out with  the involvement of a doctor.

Again a good number of candidates could not state the differences between
the procedures in  E and F.  Some candidates could not state the advantages of
H correctly but correctly stated the disadvantages.  Many candidates were able to
write the other purpose the contraceptive in  H serves.

The expected answers are:

4 (a)  (i)        Identification
                          D  -   Tubal ligation /bi-lateral tubal ligation
                          E -    Vasectomy
                          F -    Intra – uterine device/loop
                         G -    Intra – uterine device/coil
                         H -   Condom
            (ii)      Name of labelled parts
I     Vas deferens/sperm duct              VI    Uterine  wall
                     II     Epididymis                                                VII   Cervix
                     III    Testis                                                 VIII   Uterus
                    IV     Penis                                                  IX    Ovary
V     Fallopian funnel/Fimbria                     X    Fallopian tube or oviduct

(iii)      II  -   Stores sperms temporarily; produce secretions that mature
                              sperms/cause sperms to swim.

III  -   Produces sperms; sex hormones/testosterone; secretions to keep
                              sperms alive

X   -  Carries/transports eggs from ovary, towards uterus, place for
         fertilization

(b)    Materials of G & H

                 (i)    G  =  Plastic/stainless steel/copper   H  = Rubber/latex
(ii)    It is inserted into the uterus; by a doctor/physician/trained mid-wives

  (c) (i)      Advantages of G
                       -  it prevents implantation/pregnancy/prevents entry of spermatozoa into
the uterus; it can stay in the womb for years.
                       -  does not need to be changed often

                (ii)     Disadvantages of G
                       -    it can cause bleeding/discomfort/infection;
                       -    it can fall off by itself.

            (d) (i)    - a tiny incision/operation is made; by a doctor; on the man’s scrotum;
and each vas  deferens is cut; and tied off

(ii)    Difference between E and F

E is permanent /irreversible  but F can be reversed
E is surgical, but F is by insertion

        (e) (i)   Advantages of H
                    -    Easily accessible
                    -    No hormones or chemical involved
                    -    Cheap
