Many candidates were able to:
- state correct function of constituents of concrete;
- produce good sketches of timbering to a trench.
However, few of them were unable to state the three methods of setting out a building.
The expected response to question 1 is as given below:
(a) (i) 3:4:5 method;
(ii) use of Builder’s square;
- use of surveying instrument (i.e. the use of optical square, site-square or theodolite);
(b) (i) cement binds the particles of aggregates together to form a solid mass;
- fine aggregate: serve as fillers in concrete;
- coarse aggregate: distributes the stresses in concrete;
- water facilitates the hydration of cement in the concrete or lubricates the aggregates.
