Candidates’ performance was affected by the following weaknesses:

  • inadequate preparation for the examination;
  • poor communication skills;
  • inability to use the required technical terms;
  • lack of in depth knowledge of the prescribed syllabus;
  • poor knowledge of some concepts e.g. the application of nuclear reactions in generating electricity; properties of metal (para-magnetic materials);
  • poor knowledge of writing of ionic half-cell equations.

The following remedies were however suggested to overcome these weaknesses:

  • adequate preparation on the part of the candidates;
  • teachers should endeavour to give more drilling exercises to candidates;
  • teachers to improve on their teaching methods and techniques;
  • teachers should be adequately remunerated.
