Some candidates confused interfacing with facing in their explanation.
The expected answers are as follows:
(a) Definition of interfacing
An interfacing is a layer of fabric sewn between the main garment and
facing/hem/collar.
OR
An extra piece of fabric placed between the garment and the facing.
(b) Reasons for using interfacing/example for each reason
(i) and (ii)
- To prevent stretching e.g. collar, bands
- To make edge firm and strong e.g. edges of openings on blouses and jackets
- To give body or support to parts of garments e.g. pocket, collars, band.
- To make edges crisp e.g. collars and cuffs
- For reinforcing an area of a garment e.g. facings on openings, sleeve band, waist band.
(c) Factors to consider when choosing an interfacing
- Weight of fabric – the fabric of the interfacing must be lighter in weight than the fabric of the garment.
- Effect required: Whether a firm tailored effect or a slight crispness is required – this will determine the type of interfacing chosen.
- Durability of interfacing (compatibility) interfacing should have the same care treatment as the fabric used for the outer garment.
