Dyeing And Bleaching Paper 2 May/June 2015

Question 3

  1. (a)        Mention three types of fabric that can be dyed.
    (b)        Describe any six steps to produce a multi- coloured tie-dye pattern on a fabric.

Observation

The question was popular among the candidates and most of the candidates performed very well in this question.  It is interesting to state here that the candidates’ did not only describe the six steps required from them, but a very large percentage stated them in a chronological order. Evidence that they were taught well both theoretically and practically. The following points were given by the candidates to obtain high marks:

(a)        - Cotton, e.g Guinea brocade, Gaskiya, Jeans, Kaduna, Funtua, Aswani, Khaki;
-           Rayon;
-           Wool;
-           Linen;
-           Baft; e.g Teru, Calico;
-           Jute.

(b)        - Get all materials ready such as fabric, dyes, chemicals, tying materials, bowls,  rubber/hand gloves, hot water, etc.
-           Plan the design on the fabric and resist some areas by using any tying techniques.
-           Dip the tied fabric in the first coloured dye solution which should be the lightest colour and leave to absorb dye.
-           Resist the fabric for the subsequent colours with the chosen tying technique.
-           Prepare the second and subsequent dye solutions; dip the fabric in the dye solution and leave to absorb.
-           Remove the fabrics from the dye solution and spread to oxidize.
-           Loose the tied areas and rinse to remove excess dye on the surface of the fabric.
-           Dry the fabric.
-           Iron the fabric and package.
