(d) Close switch (SW).
(e) Adjust the load resistor (RL) until the ammeter reads 1 mA.
(f) Read and record the corresponding voltmeter reading in Table 2.
(g) Repeat steps (e) and (f) for the other values of current in Table 2.
(h) Plot a graph of voltage (V) on the vertical axis against current (1) on the
horizontal axis.
(i) From the graph, state the effect of the Zener diode on the output voltage.
The candidates were expected to connect the circuit as shown, measure and

(i)        The Zener diode stabilizes the output voltage of the power supply unit
irrespective of the changes in the load current.
As reported by the Chief Examiner, the readings obtained by many of the
candidates that answered this question showed that they did not know how to
adjust meter settings to correspond to indicated values of measured quantities.
