OBSERVATION

The part ‘a’ of this question was answered correctly while other parts ‘b;’ and ‘c’ were not well tackled by the majority of the candidates.

The candidates were expected to answer the question as follows:

 (a)     FUNCTIONS OF FATS IN THE BODY
i)      They are good sources of energy.
(ii)      They spare protein.
(iii)     They assist in the maintenance of constant body temperature.
(iv)     They cushion the delicate organs in the body.
(v)      They facilitate the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins.
(vi)     They contribute to flavour and palatability of the diet.
(vii)    They provide satiety and delay the onset of hunger.
(viii)   They promote healthy hair and skin.
(ix)     They provide essential fatly acids needed for good health.
(x)      They provide the body with fat soluble vitamins.
(xi)     They form part of the cell membranes throughout the body  especially in the brain.
                                                                            
 (b)    REASONS WHY SOME AMINO ACIDS ARE ESSENTIAL
(i)      The body cannot produce them, hence must be supplied by the food eaten
 (ii)      They are indispensable.
(iii)     They are also complete protein.
(iv)     They are mostly obtained from animal sources.
                                                                            
(c)      EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS
Isolencine, leucine, valine, threonine, lysine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, methionine, histidine and arginine for the children.
