Some candidates, who did not understand the questions, deviated from the topics. Others lacked the requisite vocabulary and expressions to put their ideas across. Some of candidates were weak in the use, position and placement of accents, negation and pronouns in sentences. They believed that any word could be placed anywhere in the sentence. This was apparent in their essay writing in section A.
To improve on candidates’ performance, teachers of French should be more involved in the teaching of the basic grammatical rules at each lesson. They must ensure that the students are well drilled in French essay writing.
They should encourage the students to read French novels, journals and magazines outside their prescribed textbooks to acquire more vocabulary.
