Candidates exhibited weakness in pronouncing words with liaison.
Most of them could not read the passages well. English transference reflected in candidates pronunciation of French words. For instance, words like “société, complètement, cultivateur, pour, peuvent, mouillés” etc.
Some of the candidates could not respond well to the two open ended questions in the Listening Comprehension Test.
In exposition, some of the candidates are only used to either “tu” or vous” and so get confused when questions are asked in any of the forms they are not used to. Some of them memorized some popular topics and so give fixed answers to questions when they hear a familiar word in the question
SUGGESTED REMEDIES
Teachers of French should endeavour to practice all aspects of the Oral French with the students before the examination.
Teachers should work more in teaching students pronunciation and lay emphasis on liaison where necessary.
Teachers should make their students conversant with the usage of “tu” and vous”
Students should be encouraged to have a lot of practice in both oral and written composition. They should also be encouraged to converse more in French within and outside the classroom.
The should also encourage the students to read simple French stories, magazines and journals so as to acquire more vocabulary.
