Identify four weaknesses of the British colonial administration in West Africa.

Observation

 

This question was not very popular with the candidates.  The few candidates that attempted the it could not score very good marks.  Majority of those that attempted this question missed its requirements and wrote on the features of colonial administration.  The overall candidates’ performance in the question was poor.

Some of the points expected from candidates included:

  •     the legislative councils were dominated by British official
  • the elective principle was restricted i.e. limited franchise;
  •   sidelined the educated elite and limited their representation in the colonial administration;
  •    the executive councils were dominated by the British officials;
  •   the governors had double votes which could be used to promote British colonial policies as against African interests;
  •   governors were dictators as they had the power to accept or reject advice given by the executive
  • councils and laws passed by the legislative councils, etc.
