This question was attempted by many candidates and the candidates performed fairly well. In part (a) candidates were able to explain malnutrition. In part (b) candidate could not suggest ways by which malnutrition could be minimized. In part (c) candidates were able to list the symptoms of Kwashiorkor.
The expected answers were as follows:
(b) Ways by which malnutrition could be minimized
- increase in animal protein and plant protein to enrich the diet of children/adequate
diet.
- government should subsidize production of cheap but balanced baby foods from
locally available products and made available to poor people
- there should be media propaganda and education on the ill effects of malnutrition
and how to overcome them through proper diet with posters, lectures, seminars
and movies.
- Reduction of losses from spoilage using modern storage techniques
- there should be universal education in nutrition in primary, secondary and post-
secondary, public medical and para-medical institutions.
