In what five ways was Western education important to the people of Nigeria?

This question was popular among the candidates and the few ones who attempted it did not score good marks. They misunderstood the demands of the question. Instead of writing on the importance of western education in the 19th; they were discussing the importance of the current situation. To get good marks, candidates were expected to mention the following points:
- Western education helped to bring different Nigerian educated groups together.
- It created a class of educated elite who formed the nucleus of nationalist struggle.
- English language was taught in schools and colleges which later became the official language.
- The education prepared trade union leaders to perform their roles effectively and efficiently.
- Through western education, Nigerians were adequately equipped to serve in the colonial administration.
- Many Nigerians had become professionals in various fields e.g. law, medicine, teaching, engineering.
- Through western education, Nigerians imbibed western culture and civilization.
- Western education had enhanced the capacity to venture into various fields of endeavour.
- Western education enhanced the economic, political and social status of the people.
