(a)   Identify any three factors that led to the British invasion of Ijebuland in 1892.

(b)   State any two effects of the British invasion of Ijebuland.

 

Observation

This was an unpopular question and was attempted by few candidates. A number of the candidates were able to answer and score good marks while few of them advanced irrelevant points. In order to get good grade, candidates were expected to highlight the following points.


    1. The Ijebu opposed free access to the coast to all traders from Yorubaland.
    2. They disallowed Christian missionary activities in their territories. 
    3. They turned back a British missionary for failing to pay a transit fee.
    4. Refusal of the Ijebu to discuss trade with the British to maintain their hold on commercial activities in Ijebuland
    5. They played the French against the British.
    1. The British invasion led to the installation of a British resident in Ibadan supported by a garrison of British troops.
    2. It expanded other British operations into other Yoruba territories, e.g, Oyo in 1893.
    3. It led to the opening of all coastal trade routes.
    4. It led to free flow of arms and ammunition.
    5. It ensured planting of Christianity in Ijebuland.
    6. It led to cooperation among British officials, traders and the people.
