Candidates' Weakness

Candidates’ weaknesses were observed in these areas:

(1) Content – Most candidates were unable to write up to the required length in essay writing.

(2) Candidates that attempted questions on proverb were unable to give the meaning before narrating stories.

(3) Some of the candidates that attempted the dialogue question presented it in prose forms.

(4) Lack of in-depth knowledge of the Language – Some candidates could not explain the terms given to them and also found it difficult to answer questions on sound system.

(5) Some candidates wrote illegibly.

(6) Literature Texts – Some candidates found it difficult answering questions on the literature texts prescribed. This simply attested to the fact that they did not read the set books.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

(1) Teachers should drill the students more on essay writing especially the dialogue type.

(2) Candidates should be well taught on sound system i.e. manner and places of articulation as it is a very important aspect of language.

(3) They should also be given constant assignments on proverbs so as to broaden their knowledge.

(4) More attention should be given to Igbo grammar, essay writing and literature.

(5) Candidates should be encouraged to equip themselves with the prescribed set books to enable them prepare well for the examination.

(6) Teachers should endeavour to take candidates through past question papers before the exams in order to help them familiarize with the rubrics.

(7) Government should always organize seminars and workshops for teachers to keep them abreast with the best global practices in Igbo language teaching.
