Candidates’ weaknesses were observed in these areas:
- Most candidates were unable to write up to the required length in essay writing.
- Many candidates wrote the address part in their letter writing using Igbo language.
- Paragraphing in the essay writing was not properly done and it affected their marks in organization.
- Some of the candidates that answered the question on the proverb failed to explain the proverb before illustrating.
- Some candidates found it difficult to answer questions on grammar.
- Error in the question selection was also recorded.
- There was a clear evidence of illegible writings.
- Some candidates found it difficult to answer questions on the literature texts.
4. SUGGESTED REMEDIES
- Drilling the students on essay writing should be done after each lesson to enable the candidates to acquire the basic skills needed for essay writing.
- Candidates should be made to understand that essay lengths affect their scores.
- They should also be given constant assignments on proverbs so as to broaden their knowledge.
- More attention should be given to Igbo grammar, essay writing, customs and institution likewise literature as regards to the set books.
- Candidates should be encouraged to read all the recommended texts before the examination.
(6) Candidates should be advised to develop interest in Igbo language as a whole.
(7) Government should assist the schools to procure the recommended texts for their libraries.
(8) Heads of schools should ensure that qualified teachers are employed to teach the subject
